A Snowy Yard
Creating a believable environment by using a mix of Megascans and self-made assets
Laying out a visually interesting scene by using various art principles
Creating a narrative through environmental story-telling
Goals & Learnings
This project was created over the holiday season and draws inspiration from Resident Evil Village. My goal with this environment was to capture a balance between serenity and a cold, creepy atmosphere. Most of the assets are sourced from Quixel Megascans, while the background trees come from a free asset pack.
To achieve the snowy setting, I made a custom material that overlays snow onto surfaces.

Focal Point

I aimed to create a compelling focal point that blends naturally into the environment while still sparking curiosity. The chosen object invites viewers to imagine the story behind the scene: Does someone live nearby? Are they still alive? And how does the presence of the skull tie into this narrative?

Layout

The composition follows the rule of thirds. The yard occupies the lower two-thirds of the image, creating a sense of openness, while the upper third is defined by trees and sky, naturally guiding the viewer’s gaze downward.
Each area of the scene is positioned within its own section of the grid: the left and right portions of the forest, the open space in the bottom left, the wall structure, and the focal point.
In retrospect, the layout could be improved by zooming in on the lower part of the scene. This adjustment would align the wall with the upper horizontal third and bring the focal point closer to the bottom-left intersection, strengthening the overall composition.

Leading Lines

Several leading lines are ment to guide the viewer’s attention toward the focal point: The curve of the wall, the treelines, and the shadows in the bottom right of the scene.
